The Local’s Guide to East Alabama Outdoors: Hiking, Walking & Exploring Calhoun and Talladega Counties

I spent this past weekend walking the paved track at Oxford Lake, and between the incredible spring weather and the ducks enjoying the water (I couldn’t resist snapping a few photos!), it was a perfect reminder of the lifestyle East Alabama offers.

When buyers ask me about relocating to Calhoun or Talladega County, they aren't just asking about property lines and school zones; they are asking about the quality of life. Whether you are looking for a stroller-friendly morning walk, a world-class mountain biking excursion, or a rugged hike to the highest point in Alabama, our local geography delivers.

If you want to experience the true picture of East Alabama’s outdoor lifestyle, skip the generic travel guides. Here are my expert-level details on the best places to walk, run, and hike in our area.

1. Oxford Lake Park (Oxford, AL)

Best For: Family outings, paved walking, and community events. Located conveniently near the Oxford Exchange and the Highway 21 corridor, Oxford Lake is the quintessential community park.

  • The Route: The park features a fully paved, flat walking track that circles the lake, making it highly accessible for strollers, wheelchairs, and runners looking for a consistent, measured loop.

  • Local Expert Tip: This isn't just a walking track; it is the hub of Oxford’s community life. It features multiple playgrounds, a splash pad in the summer, pickle ball and tennis courts. If you are a morning walker, get there early—the track is a popular spot for locals before the workday begins. (And yes, bringing along a little snack for the ducks is practically a local requirement! Watch the goose poo!)

2. Coldwater Mountain (Anniston, AL)

Best For: World-class mountain biking and dedicated trail hiking. Managed by the Forever Wild Land Trust, Coldwater Mountain isn't just a local trail—it is a nationally recognized, IMBA-designated Bronze Level Ride Center.

  • The Route: With over 35 miles of purpose-built, single-track trails, this mountain caters to everyone. Beginners can stick to the "Baby Bear" loop, while advanced riders can tackle the technical descents of "Bomb Dog."

  • Local Expert Tip: Hikers are welcome here, but you must stay alert, as these are primarily biking trails. If you are looking for a fantastic, moderate hike with great elevation gain, park at the Anniston Trailhead (off Coldwater Pump Road) and take the hiking-only sections. The trailheads are meticulously maintained, offering excellent facilities before you hit the woods.

3. The Chief Ladiga Trail (Calhoun County)

Best For: Distance running, road cycling, and long, scenic walks. This is Alabama’s premiere rail-trail. Stretching 33 miles from the Anniston/Weaver area, straight through the Jacksonville State University campus, and all the way to the Georgia state line (where it connects to the Silver Comet Trail), this paved pathway is an incredible local asset.

  • The Route: Because it is built on an old railroad bed, the path is wide, paved, and incredibly flat. It cuts through heavily canopied forests, open wetlands, and local farmland.

  • Local Expert Tip: If you want the most scenic section for a casual weekend walk, jump on the trail at the Jacksonville depot near JSU. You will get immediate access to beautiful tree canopies and local coffee shops just steps off the trail. If you are training for a marathon or distance cycling, this trail provides miles of uninterrupted, traffic-free pavement.

4. Cheaha State Park & The Pinhoti Trail (Talladega County)

Best For: Stunning vistas, rugged hiking, and weekend camping. You cannot discuss East Alabama real estate or geography without talking about Mount Cheaha, the highest point in the state at 2,407 feet.

  • The Route: Cheaha offers everything from the accessible Bald Rock Boardwalk (which is wheelchair and stroller friendly and ends with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Talladega National Forest) to the rugged, steep inclines of the Lake Trail.

  • Local Expert Tip: For serious hikers, Mount Cheaha serves as a major connection point to the Pinhoti Trail, a 335-mile long-distance trail that winds through the Appalachian foothills. If you are looking for a weekend escape, the park offers excellent stone cabins (originally built by the CCC) and incredible sunset views from the lodge restaurant.
