If you are thinking about moving to Alabama, there is a good chance Birmingham is at the top of your search list. As the state's economic and cultural hub, the "Magic City" has a lot to offer. However, for many out-of-state buyers, the true magic isn't found directly in the city center—it is found in the incredible small towns and suburbs surrounding it.

Why are so many out-of-state relocators expanding their search outside the city limits?

  • Lower Property Taxes & Cost of Living: Alabama already boasts some of the lowest property taxes in the nation, and moving just one county over from Birmingham can drop your tax bill and housing costs even further.

  • Space to Breathe: Whether you want a large backyard, land for a garden, or a neighborhood where the houses aren't sitting right on top of each other, the suburbs deliver the acreage you can't find downtown.

  • Natural Beauty: The areas surrounding Birmingham offer unmatched access to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, world-class bass fishing lakes, and sprawling national forests.

If you are looking for top-rated schools, a quieter lifestyle, or just more house for your money, expanding your search to a 60-mile radius around Birmingham opens up a world of real estate opportunities.

The I-20 Corridor: Commutes, Distances, and Lifestyle

When my clients tell me they work in Birmingham but want a sense of community, less traffic, and an affordable lifestyle, I immediately point them east along the I-20 corridor.

Here is exactly what the commute looks like from these booming communities:

1. Trussville, Leeds, & Moody

  • Distance from Birmingham: ~15 to 20 miles

  • The Commute: 16 to 20 minutes without traffic. During rush hour, expect a 40 to 50-minute drive.

  • The Draw: Located just outside the city limits, these towns offer the ultimate convenience. You get booming local economies, incredible shopping (like the Shops of Grand River in Leeds), and highly sought-after school systems. It is the perfect spot for daily commuters who want suburban comfort.

2. Pell City & Lincoln (Logan Martin Lake)

  • Distance from Birmingham: ~30 to 35 miles

  • The Commute: 30 to 40 minutes without traffic. During peak traffic, the drive can take 45 to 60 minutes.

  • The Draw: Want to live on the water? Just 35 miles east of Birmingham, you will find stunning lakefront homes and resort-style living around Logan Martin Lake. It is the absolute perfect location for boaters, fishermen, and remote workers who only need to commute into the city a few times a week.

3. Oxford & Anniston (Calhoun County)

  • Distance from Birmingham: ~60 to 65 miles

  • The Commute: About 1 hour without traffic. During heavy traffic or accidents on I-20, expect 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1.5 hours.

  • The Draw: Pushing right to that 60-mile mark brings you to the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Here, you can find luxury golf course communities (like Cider Ridge in Oxford), historic homes, and easy access to the Talladega National Forest—often at a massive discount compared to the immediate Birmingham metro.

4. Jacksonville

  • Distance from Birmingham: ~75 miles

  • The Commute: 1 hour and 15 minutes without traffic. During game days or rush hour, the commute can push up to 1 hour and 45 minutes.

  • The Draw: Home to Jacksonville State University, this vibrant college town offers a slower, peaceful pace of life. It is highly desirable for those who work remotely full-time or only occasionally commute, offering modern craftsman subdivisions and stunning mountain views.
